When Less Really Is More: B&T’s Intimate DC Wedding

There’s something really special about photographing an intimate wedding. And B&T’s day at the DC War Memorial and District Winery? It was one of those celebrations that reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

A Ceremony That Actually Felt Like Them

B&T chose the DC War Memorial for their ceremony, and wow, what a choice. If you’ve never been, picture this (and see below): the stunning white columns, dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, and this peaceful, almost sacred feeling despite being right in the heart of the city. It’s one of those DC spots that truly feels like a hidden gem.

With about 30 people there, the ceremony had this incredible intimacy. Every single person sitting there mattered to B&T; no filler guests, no plus-ones they’d never met. Just their people. And you could feel it.

The Details That Made Me Smile

The reception setup at District Winery kept the summer garden party vibe going. Simple white calla lilies in these cool geometric vases (florals designed by the groom’s sister!), natural wood tables, clean lines everywhere. Nothing felt overdone or like they were trying too hard. That’s the thing about smaller weddings—you can actually focus on the details that matter to you instead of just filling space.

Oh, and their dog (Rosie) stole the show while wearing a floral collar that matched the bouquet. I mean, come ON.

Here’s What I Keep Thinking About

The thing that really struck me while photographing B&T’s wedding was how present they were. Like, genuinely there. Not stressed about timelines or wondering if Aunt Susan found her table or worried about getting photos with 200 people.

I caught so many moments of them just… being. Laughing during the ceremony. Stealing quiet seconds in the car between locations. Feeding each other cake with these huge, unguarded smiles. They weren’t performing their wedding day, they were living it. And that’s kind of the whole point, isn’t it?

Why This Approach Just Works

I’ve photographed all kinds of weddings, and I genuinely love them all. But there’s something about intimate celebrations that creates space for real connection. B&T could actually have conversations with their guests instead of speed-dating through a receiving line. They could slow down. Breathe. Remember.

The practical stuff is nice too; smaller guest lists mean you can book venues that don’t normally host big events (like, hello, DC War Memorial). You can put your budget toward things you actually care about instead of just trying to feed an army. Planning is less overwhelming. But honestly, those are just bonuses.

The real magic is in what I saw through my camera: two people surrounded by exactly the humans who matter most, celebrating without all the noise.

If You’re Thinking About Going Small

I’m not saying everyone should have a micro wedding. BUT if you’re reading this and thinking “wait, we don’t actually want 200 people there”…listen to that.

B&T combined an iconic outdoor ceremony spot with a relaxed, modern reception venue, and the flow just worked. They prioritized quality over quantity in every decision, from their guest list to their design choices. And the result? A day that felt completely, authentically theirs.

Your wedding can be meaningful at any size. But there’s something to be said for keeping it small enough that you can actually be in it instead of managing it.

Planning something intimate in DC, Maryland, or Virginia? I’d love to chat about your day and what matters most to you.

Special thanks to the vendors that made this day so special!
